After her prolific Festival appearances, Yuja Wang is the featured soloist in the Houston Symphony’s opening concert and gala marking their 105th season. This momentous occasion also serves as a special celebration for the ensemble after the devastating hurricane that hit Houston a year ago and subsequently cancelled their opening concert for the 2017/18 season.
Led by guest conductor Gustavo Gimeno, the concert will take place September 8 in Jones Hall. The evenings program will begin with Ravel’s rhapsodic and highly spirited Alborada del gracioso, followed by Yuja as soloist in Ravel’s showpiece Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, a work commissioned by concert pianist Paul Wittgenstein who lost his right arm during World War I. The program will also include Barber’s playful Overture to The School for Scandal, a synthesis of the spirit in Richard Brinsley Sheridan’s play; as well as excerpts from Prokofiev’s famous ballet Romeo and Juliet. Concluding the program, Yuja will play selections for solo piano by Rachmaninoff.
