Yuja Wang becomes new artistic partner of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra

Yuja Wang, one of the most exciting and dynamic pianists of our time, joins forces with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra as their newest Artistic Partner. The collaboration promises to bring a fresh perspective to our music-making, with a focus on projects where Yuja leads the orchestra from the piano.

The inaugural tour of this exciting partnership will take place in January 2024, including compositions by a.o. Stravinsky, Janáček and Gershwin when Yuja and the MCO will explore pieces that are not often performed, with a particular emphasis on major 20th-century composers. Some of these works are often overlooked, but they offer a wealth of opportunities for exploration and discovery. With Yuja at the helm, the MCO is sure to bring these hidden gems to life in new and exciting ways.  Further plans include tours through Europe, North America and Asia.

The MCO’s Managing Director, Michael Adick, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, saying “We are thrilled to welcome Yuja Wang to the MCO family. Her passion for music and her exceptional talent will undoubtedly inspire our musicians and audiences alike. We are excited to see what kind of magic Yuja and the MCO will create together.”

Yuja Wang is equally enthusiastic about the collaboration, saying “I am honoured and excited to become the Artistic Partner of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. The MCO is known for its innovative programming, distinctive sound and vibrant performances. I am happy to continue my exploration of play-conducting with the wonderful musicians of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, which I hope will create some unforgettable musical experiences.”
